The Music Department on Dover recently hosted workshops for our string playing students with Stephen Chin. Stephen is the Principal String Teacher and Director of Orchestras at Brisbane Grammar School. He holds a Master of Music specialising in violin performance and pedagogy, and lectured in String Pedagogy and Practicum at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
Stephen studied composition with John Harding and Peter Sculthorpe. Stephen is in demand as a string and orchestral clinician, regularly conducting international workshops and festivals. He is an examiner for the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) and regular adjudicates competitions.
Stephen composes pieces students love to play and arranges works by the great masters, making them accessible to younger players, while promoting excellence in the development of string ensemble playing. Stephen’s warm and vibrant personality exudes a love and passion for music which is contagious to all around him. Our students were challenged and inspired, encouraged, and so excited to be members of a string orchestra.
Parents and students expressed immense gratitude after the weekend was over:
‘Stephen Chin was such an effective teacher!! What a great opportunity for our children’
‘It was amazing and fantastic! Our daughter is still talking so much about it!’
‘I was so impressed by Workshop With The Composer. I was so grateful that I can be there.’
‘We really enjoyed the rehearsal/show experience with Stephen last Sunday. Superb job and so much positive energy.’
‘The session with Mr Chin was very interactive and inspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed his positive method of teaching and bringing all string instruments together. By the end of the 2 hr session Mr Chin was able to bring us to a new level. It was fun and I hope we can have more sessions like this.’
The workshop was made possible through the UWCSEA Fund.
